Record of Mortgages, Washington County, New York 1773-1881

FamilySearch has placed online the Washington County, New York mortgage records in the form of images, without an index, in their New York Land Records, 1630-1975 collection. These records can become confusing when attempting to discern the difference between the volumes, as when I was collating them for this post I noticed that there were duplicate filming of the same rolls. I have indented those films below to make it easier to select, while still showing both film rolls.

Land records usually contain the following information:

  • Names of interested parties
  • Date of transaction
  • Legal description of the property
  • Monies exchanged
  • Details of the transaction
  • Names of witnesses

[box type=”info”] NOTE: The records which occurred before and during part of 1784 happened at the time Washington County was named Charlotte County.[/box]

It is important, since the mortgages are not alphabetical on their microfilm, that you first find your ancestor in the index. It’s important that you reference and look in both, just in case your ancestor held the mortgage when they eventually sold the property.
